Come and Try Day!

FISHING CLUB TO HOST ‘KIDS FISHING DAY’ AT YARRAMBAT PARK LAKE

The Northern Suburbs Fly Fishing Club (NSFFC), in conjunction with the Greensborough Angling Club, will host its ‘Kids Come and Try Fishing Day’ at Yarrambat Park Lake on Sunday 19 October. The day is an annual fixture on the NSFFC calendar and gives members of the community an opportunity to learn how to fish for trout with bait, lure and fly.

All equipment, tackle and bait are provided free of charge and the fun starts at 9.30am and concludes at 2.00pm. The event is open to children of all ages and abilities, but children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Food and refreshments will be available at a small cost.

“This day helps to promote local fishing opportunities” said NSFFC President Glen Cox. “Many locals don't realise what good fishing they have at their back door. The carpark and wheel-chair accessible fishing platform provides convenient trout fishing that is unparalleled in Melbourne”.

The aim of the day is not only to spark an interest in local fishing opportunities, but to give kids and parents the basic skills and information they need to make the most of fishing opportunities. “Most families that holiday near the water will pack a rod and reel, but few have the basic understanding of fish food, fish behavior and the aquatic environment that's necessary to catch fish” said Glen.

There'll be around 30 fishing club members in attendance on the day to help with fishing and to share their knowledge and experience on where and how to fish for a wide variety of species. Glen pointed out that many of the members that will be attendance are elite anglers, “Many of the guys fish on a weekly basis in both fresh and saltwater; some have even represented Australia in international angling competitions abroad!”

Although there is a distinct emphasis on education, Glen explained that this doesn't detract from the fishing. “We'll stock the lake with mature Rainbow Trout especially for the event. Last year, almost every kid caught a fish; we're hoping to repeat that this year”.

For those who would like learn more about flyfishing, the NSFFC offers formal flyfishing courses for beginners, which includes guided tuition on a private fishery plus free annual club membership. Membership offers special privileges such as regular trips, casting and flytying tuition, monthly guest speakers, borrowing rights at the club library and access to a Tasmanian fishing shack.

The club holds general meetings at 7.45pm on the first Thursday of each month at its clubrooms at Yarrambat Park Lake. New members are always welcome. For further information call Cain Polidano on 0409 703 296. The club welcomes new members of all ages and abilities.
