Trip Description:
Dog Hill is the name of property of founding and life member of our club, Norm King. For a number of years now Norm has generously hosted this regular May trip at his beautiful property in Eildon. This year will be the last time the trip is held at Dog Hill as Norm is selling the property in search of new trout waters. If you have never been to this trip, this will be your last chance so make sure you put your name down.
The trip is run as a competition fishing trip with Red Tag fly fishers club who will also be attending in numbers this year.
In addition, our Beginner’s Fly Fishing Course day on the river will be held during the trip. Please let Daryl or Brian know if you can help out by taking one of the course participants out onto the river.
Everyone is welcome to stay Friday and/or Saturday night. There is a large shed which is utilised as sleeping quarters. A stretcher, a sleeping bag and some ear plugs are recommended if you intend to sleep here. Otherwise you can camp in a designated area as pictured below. Bring your food, drinks and a camping chair, the campfire usually goes long into the night.
Please see attached maps or click here for directions to Dog Hill.
The latest information on the Goulburn is that it's flowing at 9500 mld (megalitres per day). As a reference the usual autumn flows are below 500 mld. Now, don't let this scare you away. At this level you can expect some very technical, but rewarding fishing. This is the time to put on your polaroids and go walkabouts. By polaroiding the edges and backwaters that are created at this river height, you are bound to spot numerous good sized fish. If you move carefully and fish with precision, you might be rewarded with a personal best trout from Victoria's biggest trout river.
Alternatively, there are numerous small stream options nearby offering a very attractive plan B.
Flies:
Dry Flies - Stimulator, Elk Hair Caddis
Nymphs - Green Nymph, Copper John, PT Nymph
Wet Flies - Woolly Buggers black and green, Bag Fly
